The idea of Metamorphosis with regard to the phenomena of nature was first presented by Goethe in his 'Essay on the Metamorphosis of Plants'. Goethe referred to it as 'The Key to all Art and Life'. Rudolf Steiner gave many lectures on the theme, including a series called 'Metamorphoses of the Soul' from 1909 to 1910. In more recent years the idea seems to have become the focus of increasing attention.
This term's speakers range through a scientist, an artist, a teacher trainer, a musician and a counsellor, all of whom have been asked to bring their individual observations to help us to deepen our understanding of what Rudolf Steiner characterized as the most important discovery of modern times. |
 |
14th May - Lynn Jericho Die and Become: Inner Development and the Feeling of the Abyss
'Die and Become!' (Stirb und werde!) was Goethe's great admonition 250 years ago. Both verbs take us to an inner abyss so we resist both. Yet both call out to us with a promise of inner freedom and personal initiation. It is a paradox and a dilemma for the modern soul. Most of our modern sufferings, insomnia, anxiety, depression, mania, obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours, are expressions of our resistance and our longing to die and to become.
Combining Anthroposophy, neuroscience and her experience of many years as a psycho-spiritual counsellor in New York, Lynn Jericho will delve into the feelings of the abyss and offer a new and creative perspective on how to die and become. She is the author of the world-famous 'Inner Christmas and Inner Year'. |
 |
21st May - Nick Thomas Metamorphosis and Imagination
The poet and scientist Goethe discovered the principle of metamorphosis in plant and animal forms. This will briefly be described in relation to plants, and then its significance as a bridge to spiritual science will be explored, throwing light on the new faculty of Imagination that humanity will develop in the near future. This faculty can be trained on a spiritual path, giving deeper insight into the living forces in nature that elude conventional science.
Nick was trained as an electrical engineer in the RAF. He has been interested in Rudolf Steiner's Anthroposophy since his teens and lectures widely on many themes. Currently he is engaged in research to develop a new spiritually-based scientific paradigm. |
 |
4th June - Angela Patten Metamorphosis - An illustrated talk
Metamorphosis is the miraculous transformation of form in plants, animals and the human being. The principles of Metamorphosis signify eternal life. We shall look at ways this happens.
Angela is an internationally renowned artist, lecturer, and author of 'Colour Dynamics' (published by Hawthorn Press). She also runs a Goetheanum diploma painting training in her studio in East Sussex. |
 |
18th June - Dr. Brien Masters Shakespeare's Metamorphic Stride from Iago to Iachimo
From his portrayal of the villain Iago in Othello, to his counterpart Iachimo in Cymbeline, Shakespeare takes an enormous step in his treatment of evil. Are the rest of us panting far behind or catching up? This talk will explore this aspect of metamorphosis amongst others in the last plays.
Dr. Brien Masters, a student of the anthroposophical world outlook over many years, has discovered that it offers many fresh approaches to Shakespeare's ever-contemporary vision. Following a career as a Steiner Waldorf class teacher - two of his three class 8 plays were Shakespeare productions - he has become known worldwide for his work in education (the subject of his doctorate) and music. His latest publication 'Keynotes in Life and Work' includes two essays on Shakespearean themes. |
 |
2nd July - Virginia Gilmer The Celestial City Links between the Russian Invisible City of Kitzesh, The Temple, and the New Jerusalem
The Celestial City with the Temple described in the revelation has been a reality for mystics, seers and those who came back from a near-death experience. Bunyan's 'Pilgrim's Progress' also tells of setting off from the city of destruction to the Celestial City winning over obstacles to higher knowledge. Spiritual insights in the future will find and see the Celestial City and the meaning of the Temple more clearly. A metamorphosis can be seen from the destruction of Kitzesh to the higher spiritual awareness of the New Jerusalem.
Virginia is a music teacher, painter and composer interested in the theme of portals and thresholds. |
