UNDERSTANDING THE FIRST YEARS OF LIFE
Enhancing Well-being in Childhood

What is the child’s world like? What are young children occupied with? Expanding and deepening this picture can increase children’s contentment and resources. We will look at:
• Developments taking place in the first seven years in areas such as movement, language and imagination
• The expression of these changes in play, art and social life
• The parenting qualities needed during this time
• How to encouragelearning through repetition and imitation
• The types of stimulation and protection that children need. Letting children be children
• Supporting changes and trusting the new steps
In the workshops adults meet each other in a space that encourages support and learning. They bring their questions and experiences, opening the way to new ideas, commitment and enthusiasm for the task of parenting.

Lourdes Callen facilitates learning groups on parenting which include experiential exercises, talks and dialogue. She is a counsellor with a background in Steiner Early Years Education, working both here and in Spain.

In this workshop we will explore which aspects of the child need nurturing during this phase and how to respond to the changes taking place. We will look at:
• How children’s inner life emerges during these years: The unfolding of the individuality
• The first years of childhood. The change at 9 years
• Children at 12 and the first steps into adolescence
• Challenges and joys of this period
• How to build their self-confidence and other resources for life

In this workshop we will look at the time of change from 13 to 19 and the developments that take place in body and soul. We will explore:
• The youth’s search for their own identity, ideas and values
• What might the adult’s task be in supporting this phase
• The challenges and opportunities this period brings
• Learning from our experience at that age
• How to enhance communication
• The role of interest and trust
