5G: Cause for Concern
Signs of the Time
Thursday 1st January 12am - 12am
With Jeremy Naydler
Unlike previous generations of mobile networks, the next generation of wireless interconnectivity, referred to as 5G or “fifth generation”, is not just about enhancing existing technologies through faster connections and bigger data transfer capacity. It will require the constant irradiation of the Earth, both at ground level and from satellites in space, with Extremely High Frequency electromagnetic radiation. This new radiation blanket will be part of a coordinated global effort to establish an “electronic ecosystem”, planetary in extent, which will support the growth of artificial intelligence systems and the Internet of Things, in order to create a so-called “smart planet”. In this talk, Jeremy Naydler will present reasons why we should be concerned and what, if anything, we can do to alleviate the impact of the ongoing technological revolution.
Jeremy Naydler, Ph.D., is a philosopher, cultural historian and gardener who lives and works in Oxford, England. He has long been interested in the history of consciousness and is also deeply concerned about the impact of electronic technologies on our inner life and on our relationship to nature. His most recent book, In the Shadow of the Machine: the Prehistory of the Computer and the Evolution of Consciousness, is published by Temple Lodge (2018).
