A talk on the first Mystery Drama, with reading and discussion.
The play was a revolutionary innovation when it was first presented in 1910. It still is.
We shall be exploring some of the methods Steiner used in the presentation of this dramatic work. He said that all of anthroposophy is there in the Rosicrucian Drama. The talk will explore the relationship of the play to Goethe’s fairy tale, ‘The Green Snake and the Beautiful Lily’. Originally Steiner planned to put a version of the tale onstage. It did not work – it had to be made more contemporary. Many of the strategies he used were new to the realm of drama; the content of the play is so rich that they needed to be.
